The 501st Legion: Doing Good Across the Galaxy

In 1997, a group of Star Wars fans united to create one of the world’s most recognizable costuming organizations—the 501st Legion. Known as “Vader’s Fist,” this international volunteer fan group brings Star Wars villains to life while giving back to communities worldwide. The 501st Legion has become so iconic that its name has been officially incorporated into Star Wars lore. Even though they have approval of creator George Lucas, they aren’t affiliated with Lucasfilm.

501st Garrisons, Squads, and Outposts exist across the globe, spanning nearly every continent. In fact, we’re excited to see our local Chicago 501st Legion, the Midwest Garrison, at our regional comic convention, C2E2 (aka the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo)! Wherever you are, dedicated fans in gleaming white armor are likely nearby, ready to make a difference.

More Than Just Costumes

The 501st Legion crafts screen-accurate costumes of stormtroopers, Sith Lords, bounty hunters, and other morally ambiguous characters. But their mission extends beyond cosplay. They focus on three key objectives:

• Promoting Star Wars: By attending conventions, events, and charity functions, the 501st keeps the fandom alive for all ages.

• Perfecting Costumes: Members build, sew, and craft their own gear to film-quality accuracy. Their dedication brings the Star Wars universe to life.

• Giving Back: They visit children’s hospitals, raise funds for non-profts, and march in parades, using their passion to support good causes.

Sci Fi Hawaiian Shirts

The 501st Legion does not have an official uniform, so the Hawaiian shirts are a casual and fun way to identify with the group and express their fandom. The shirts are a recognizable symbol of the 501st Legion, and they are often seen at conventions and other events where the group members gather.
